Ramadan is a sacred month when the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and devils are chained. It is the month in which the Quran was revealed and a time when prayers and supplications (duas) are especially accepted by Allah. Therefore, dua should be sought during this month.
In this blog, we will present the essential duas that should be recited throughout the blessed month of Ramadan, from sighting the moon to breaking our fast each evening.
Significance of Dua in Ramadan
Duas are at the core of Islam. It is the means of direct communication with Allah. Allah accepts the prayers offered wholeheartedly. The chance of acceptance of the dua increases during Ramadan.
The Quran highlights the importance of dua. Allah says;
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ
Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you.’’ (Surah Ghafir, 40:60)
Supplication in Ramadan holds immense significance as it is the ‘essence of worship’ and guaranteed to be accepted, particularly at Iftar.
Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3598).
Ramadan is the holiest month. It should be observed respectfully.Follow the rules of Ramadan to make it spiritually enriching.
Dua to Reach the Month of Ramadan
Ramadan is the blessed month, and Muslims await its arrival. There are several duas that Muslims recite to reach the month of Ramadan.
The most widely recited phrase expressed by Muslims as the month approaches is:
اَللّٰهُمَّ بَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَان
Allahumma Ballighna Ramadan
"O Allah, let us reach Ramadan
You can also recite this dua to reach the holy month of Ramazan.
Allahumma Baarik lana fi Rajaba wa Sha’bana wa Balligh-na Ramadan
Oh Allah, grant us blessing (Barakah) during the months of Rajab and Shaban, and allow us to reach Ramadan.
Dua Upon Sighting the Ramadan Moon
Ramadan starts with the sighting of the moon of Ramadan. When you see the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan, it is recommended to make this beautiful supplication.
Hazrat Bilal bin Yahya bin Talhah bin Ubaidullah narrates that when the Prophet (SAW) would see a crescent moon, he would say:
Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu rabbana wa tarda, rabbuna wa rabbuk-Allah
“O Allah, bring this moon upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, and success in what You love and are pleased with. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah.” ( Jami at-Tirmidhi 3451)
Dua for Intention of Fasting (Sehri Dua)
Before beginning your fast, it is recommended to make the intention in your heart. The intention doesn't need to be verbalized. Read this dua to start your fast.
وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
Wa Bisawmi Ghadin Nawaitu Min Shahri Ramadan
‘I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan.’
The intention in the heart is sufficient according to most scholars, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not narrate a specific wording for the intention.
Dua for Breaking Fast (Iftar Dua)
The moment of breaking the fast is a special time when duas are accepted. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of supplication at this moment. Hazrat Mu'adh ibn Zuhrah narrates that the Prophet of Allah (SAW) used to say when he broke his fast:
“O Allah, for You I have fasted, and upon Your provision I have broken my fast.” (Abu Dawud 2358)
Dua After Breaking Fast
There are several reported supplications you can make after breaking your fast. This is the most authentic supplication found in Hadith. It is ideally recited after you have actually broken the fast.
Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa reports that I saw Ibn Umar (RA) holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet (SAW) said, when he broke his fast:
Dhahaba al-zama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha Allah.
“Thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain if Allah wills”. (Sunan Abi Dawud 2357)
Dua When Breaking Fast With a Group of People
Ramadan is the occasion when families and friends come together for Iftar. When breaking your fast with a group of people or as a guest, there are specific supplications you can make for your host and the gathering.
Hazrat Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrates that;
The Prophet (SAW) came to visit Sa'd ibn Ubaydah, and he brought bread and olive oil, and he ate them. Then the Prophet (SAW) said:
Aftara ‘indakumus-saa’imoona, wa ‘akala ta‘aamakumul-abraaru, wa sallat ‘alaykumul-malaa’ikatu.
“May the fasting people break their fast with you, may the pious eat your food, and may the angels pray for you.” ( Sunan Abi Dawud 3854)
Duas for the Three Ashras (Stages) of Ramadan
Ramadan is traditionally divided into three stages (Ashras). Each consists of ten days. Each Ashra has its own significance and a specific dua associated with it. According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described these three stages.
First Ashra (Days 1-10): Mercy of Allah (Rahmah)
The first ten days of Ramadan are dedicated to seeking Allah's mercy. During this period, Muslims focus on repentance and asking for Allah's compassion. Read this dua during the first ten days.
O my Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the Best of those who show mercy.
Second Ashra (Days 11-20): Forgiveness of Allah (Maghfirah)
The middle ten days of Ramadan emphasize seeking Allah's forgiveness for our sins. This is a time for sincere repentance and asking Allah to pardon our shortcomings. The dua for 2nd Ashra is;
Astaghfirullah Rabbi Min Kulli Dhanbin wa Atubu Ilayh
I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for all my sins, and I repent to Him.
Third Ashra (Days 21-30): Protection from Hellfire (Nijat)
The final ten days of Ramadan are the most blessed. These nights contain the Laylatul Qadr. This period focuses on seeking refuge from the Hellfire and striving for entry into Paradise.
اَللّٰهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ
Allahumma Ajirni Minan-nar
"O Allah, save me from the Fire."
The Laylatul Qadr Dua
Laylatul Qadr is a sacred night that falls during the last 10 days of Ramadan, specifically on the 27th night. There is an authentic dua taught by the Prophet (SAW) to Aisha (RA) for the Night of Decree (Laylatul Qadr). Since this night falls during the fasts of Ramadan, it is highly recommended to recite this throughout the final ten nights:
Hazrat Aisha (RA) narrates that when she asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication, if I come upon Laylatul-Qadr?’ He (SAW) said: Say:
“O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850)
Taraweeh Dua
Taraweeh is a special prayer which is offered in Ramadhan after Isha. It is a sunnah prayer and is offered in two rakat. After four rakat, the dua is recited, known as Tasbeeh Taraweeh.
Subhana zil mulki wal malakut, subhana zil izzati wal azmati wal haybati wal qudrati wal kibriya’i wal jabarut. Subhanal malikil hayyil lazi la yanamu wa la yamut. Subbuhun quddusun rabbuna wa rabbul mala’ikati war-ruh.
“Glory be to the Owner of the World and the Kingdom. Glory be to the Possessor of Might, Greatness, Reverence, Power, Pride, and Majesty. Glory be to the Ever-Living King who neither sleeps nor dies. All-Perfect, All-Holy, our Lord and the Lord of the Angels and the Spirit.”
Dua Upon Completing the Quran (Khatm al-Quran)
Muslims strive to complete the recitation of the Quran during Ramadan. Most huffaz who have memorized the Quran read the entire Quran in Taraweeh. Upon completion, it is recommended to make extensive dua, as this is a time when supplications are answered.
"O Allah, rectify the Ummah of Muhammad, O Allah, relieve the Ummah of Muhammad, O Allah, have mercy on the Ummah of Muhammad."
