What Are the 10 Qira'at

The 10 Qira'at are ten primary methods of reciting the Quran. Each method is passed down through authentic chains of narration tracing back to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These variations involve differences in pronunciation, vowelization, and sometimes word forms, while preserving the same message and meaning.

Qira'at Nafi' (Madinah)

It is transmitted by Warsh ( Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Warsh) and Qalun (Isa ibn Mina al-Qalun). Warsh is widely used in North and West Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, parts of Sudan). Qalun is used in parts of Libya and Tunisia.

Qira'at Ibn Kathir (Makkah)

Qira'at Ibn Kathir is a way of reciting the Quran, transmitted from the renowned scholar Ibn Kathir al-Makki. It is transmitted by Al-Bazzi and Qunbul. Features unique vowel patterns and elongation rules. Historically used in Makkah.

Qira'at Abu Amr (Basrah)

Named after the scholar Abu Amr al-Basri, whose recitation style became renowned in Basra. Transmitted by Ad-Duri and As-Susi. It is known for specific idgham (assimilation) rules. Used in parts of Sudan and East Africa.

Qira'at Ibn Amir (Damascus)

Qira'at Ibn Amir is a specific method of Quranic recitation attributed to Abdullah Ibn Amir al-Yahsibi. Transmitted by Hisham and Ibn Dhakwan. Has distinctive rules for certain letters and pronunciations. Used in parts of Syria and Yemen

Qira'at Asim (Kufa)

Named after Asim ibn Abi al-Najud. Transmitted by Hafs and Shu'bah. This is the version most Muslims are familiar with today. Hafs is the most widespread reading globally (used Mushafs). Shu'bah is used in parts of Sudan.

Qira'at Hamzah (Kufa)

Attributed to the reciter Hamzah Ibn Habib az-Zayyat, a prominent reciter from Kufa, Iraq. Transmitted by Khalaf and Khallad. It is known for the strict application of certain pronunciation rules. Used in limited regions.

Qira'at Al-Kisa'i (Kufa)

Named after the 8th-century scholar Imam Al-Kisa'i, one of the seven primary Quranic reciters. Transmitted by Abu al-Harith and Ad-Duri. It has specific rules for Madd (elongation). This Qiraat is less commonly used today.

Qira'at Ya'qub (Basrah)

This Qirat is attributed to Ya'qub al-Hadrami, an 8th-century scholar from Basra. Transmitted by Ruways and Rawh. It is also one of the three later-accepted readings. This qirat has unique features in pronunciation.

Qira'at Khalaf (Baghdad)

A method of Quranic recitation named after its transmitter, Khalaf ibn Hisham al-Bazzar. Transmitted by Ishaq and Idris. The newest of the ten accepted reading styles. Khalaf was also a transmitter of Hamzah's reading.
